Mother’s Day

It’s coming up pretty soon. I’m sure you’ve heard. I’ve been looking forward to it for a couple weeks now. And now that G-Man is old enough to make awesome things at school like handprint flowers and macaroni necklaces, I’m even more excited.

Don’t get me wrong – I haven’t always loved Mother’s Day. In fact, I used to hate it. But I was able to eventually use it to celebrate the women who are mother figures in my life, and now that I have these two little people around, it’s fun to watch them learn how to express gratitude and appreciation.

Because that’s what it’s about, isn’t it? Expressing gratitude and appreciation.

Mother’s Day was a big deal to my mom. I don’t feel like she placed unrealistic expectations on us, but she did have a couple expectations. She wanted us to put some thought into what we were doing for her, and she wanted us to do something. It didn’t have to be extravagant, but just had to be something. She always told me her favorite Mother’s Day was when I was a teenager and I planned and cooked the entire Sunday meal. For her, it was a representation of what she had taught me and an opportunity to see that I had paid attention and learned something. Plus, it gave her a little break. *grin*

So, since I can’t make dinner for my mom this Mother’s Day, I’m going to try something else – finding ways to express gratitude and appreciation for the women around me that are mothering others. Because that’s what it’s about, right?

Want to join me? What can you do to express gratitude and appreciation to someone who is a mother in your life?

P.S. There are lots of ways to show gratitude and appreciation, but if you need ideas on actual gifts, I have some:

• You could head over to the Parent du Jour and read my parenting profile today and then enter to win a copy of my CD to give to a special mother figure in your life.

• You could send someone to the awesome Power of Moms retreat in Park City next week. Linda and Richard Eyre, Saren Eyre Loosli, and April Perry will all be speaking and I am going to be singing! I can’t wait! There are still a few spots left!

• You could take advantage of pre-registration awesome prices and take yourself and a friend to Time Out for Women this fall! I’m performing in Boise, Houston, Las Vegas, and Atlanta this fall. I’d love to see you!

Not sure if I am at the right “spot”-I so enjoyed Macy’s special performance here outside Boston. So touching. So gave me cause to remember my mom, now gone, and me as a mother to my children now grown and gone away. My kids still recall what a joy and relief to come home from school to find me home. My mom was rarely home-”Off saving the world”, Dad would say. But she taught me so much about the world outside our home-keen insight and passion for the unknown. What I understand, I’ve shared with my children and now my grandchildren as well.
So, the songs that come to my mind are “Love at Home”-sung with my mom and little sister many years ago and “Love is Spoken Here”-sung by my children. Tears still come to my eyes with these two songs.
Families ARE Foever!
